Copter Mission
(designed by Oriol Gmez and Daniel Villalon)

Disclaimer

This is only a game and should be treated as such. Neither Oriol Gmez or Daniel Villalon have anything against Americans or Chinese; We simply decided to put nations to make the game a little more fun, and because it fits the end of the game... You'll see when you finish it.

1. Introduction

America and China are at war, and America is winning! You are in command of an American helicopter designed for combat which has suffered heavy damages caused by a desperate Chinese attack in an attempt to turn the tables. One of your thrusters and your propulsion system is malfunctioning and so you decide that it is time to flee the scene.
You find yourself in a Chinese city in which you are slowly losing altitude. The only problem is... You are surrounded by buildings and Chinese helicopters which are looking for you, trying to mow you down despite you having abandoned the field. You will have to destroy the buildings and the enemy missiles, until you are able to land in a safer place. I hope you can survive this... Copter Mission. The Chinese are after you!

2. Installation and running

This program isn't all that complicated. Unzip the file called td_en.zip in any folder and run the file called game.exe or game, if you have see extensions turned off.

Once the game is run, you will be presented with the main menu with two simple options, start and exit.

3. The game

The mechanics are simple. You are aboard a helicopter which is falling down enemy territory. In your path you will find buildings, which they will appear in front of you (tall buildings) or low buildings, whose roof will be very close to you when you fly over them. The only way to avoid crashing into these buildings is by demolishing them. Your helicopter is equipped with missiles which are shot in a straight line (for tall buildings), and bombs, which are shot vertically downwards (low buildings).
You beat the game when you manage to land at a safe place, that is to say, level 256. If you receive too many impacts you will lose the game, and you and your flying copter will fall to unavoidable death.
Furthermore, during the game you will find that the Chinese are still looking for you despite your desperate attempts to flee. They will shoot fast missiles equipped with an automatic targetting system that you will have to intercept by using your copter's defence missiles.

3.1. Ammo

Your missiles and bombs are measured in ammunition. For simplicity's sake. your ammunition does not distinguish between missiles or bombs. If your ammunition falls to 0 you will be unable to shoot, until you get more via the bonus items.

The helicopter flies automatically over the city without you needing to control it. You will just need to deal with buildings, enemies and bonuses.
Use the right arrow key to shoot missiles (tall buildings) and the down arrow key to shoot bombs (low buildings). If you hit a building it will crumble, allowing you passage. If you shoot too late, your helicopter will crash against the building and you will lose a point of health.

3.2. Enemy missiles

The Chinese are attacking and you will need to defend yourself. You will hear a missile sound which gets lower in pitch as it approaches your copter. You will need to hold down either the left control or the left alt key (either one works) and the left, down or right arrow keys depending on which side the missile is coming from. You will beable to hear this via your headphones.

3.4. The map

The map is generated randomly every time a new game is started and consists of256 cells or levels, with one of these three elements:

A: Tall, frontal buildings. Buildings that appear in front of you and are represented by a high alarm type sound and are destroyed by pressing the right arrow key.
B. Low buildings: These appear vertically below you and are represented by a low alarm type sound. You destroy these with the down arrow key to launch a bomb.
C. Bonus: They increase your health and ammunition.

3.5. Buildings

Every time a building appears it will be indicated by an alarm like sound. It can come from the far right and be high pitched (tall building), or more to the center and somewhat lower pitched (low building). In any case, you need to use your weapons to destroy it. You will hear an explosion if the building was successfully demolished.

3.6. Bonus

There are two types of bonuses on the map: Health or ammunition.
You have a small amount of time to pick them up, otherwise they will just disappear. Use the space bar to pick them up when you hear a tone indicating it. A pistol reload-ish sound indicates ammunition, and a mechanical gizzmo sound indicates health.
If you try to grab a bonus when there is none active, you will lose one health.

3.7. Crashing

If you don't destroy the building in time, your copter will crash against it and you will lose a point of health. When your health is at 0, you will fall and die.

3.8. Ammo

Your ammunition decreases every time you shoot. When it gets to 0 you will be unable to shoot, so use it wisely and don't waste it! Just a friendly warning, there's little ammo in the game and the probability that you run out of ammunition is high.

3.8. Scoring

At the end of the game you will be able to submit your scores to oriolgomez.com by using the option that will appear in the menu. Here's how scoring works:
-Destroy building: 500 points
Obtain bonus: 250 points
Intercept enemy missile: 1000 points
Crash against building: Lose 500 points
Enemy missile gets you: Lose 800 points
You try to grab a bonus and there is none: lose 500 points

4. The endless mode

The endless mode is a mode where there is no predefined end. You will get many random events which include enemy waves and building free zones, thunderstorms, and many other things which I do not wish to spoil. The game goes on until you lose all your health... Or some disaster happens.
You can also die due to hunger or thirst. Press the number 3 to check how hungry and thirsty you are, and press the number 4 to check how much food and water you've left. Use the enter key to eat, and tab to drink. Bonus item will give you food and water in endless mode.
